The Rhinelander Police Department began its Bicycle Patrol Program in 2000 as part of a Community Oriented Policing Unit.  Bicycle Patrol Officers monitor the downtown area of Rhinelander in addition to city parks, neighborhoods, and special events.

Bicycle Patrol Officers are able to positively interact with citizens and business owners while on patrol.  The Bicycle Patrol Program is unique due to the fact that Bicycle Patrol Officers are more accessible to the public than officers in patrol cars.  Bicycle Patrol Officers are able to be more discrete while on patrol which allows them greater access to individuals who may be violating the law.  Each Bicycle Patrol Officer attends a five day International Police Mountain Bike Association (IPMBA) training course.  At the present time, the Rhinelander Police Department has three certified bicycle patrol officers and owns two Smith & Wesson Tactical Police Mountain Bicycles.  The Rhinelander Police Department Bicycle Patrol Program is a positive community oriented policing tool for the City of Rhinelander and its residents.

To learn more about bicycle safety click here or contact the Rhinelander Police Department for more information.  The Rhinelander Police Department occasionally distributes free bicycle helmets to the public.  Please contact us periodically to find out if we have any bicycle helmets in stock.  As always, remember to wear your protective gear and be safe!
